Hiking difficulty levels
(source: various Croatian mountain societies organised as members of the umbrella Croatian Mountaineering Association)

Fitness level

F1 – easy (altitude difference less than 500 metres or less than 5 hours of hiking); F2- moderate (altitude difference between 500 and 1000m or between 5 and 7 hours of hiking); F3- difficult (altitude difference between 1000 and 1300 metres or between 7 and 9 hours of hiking); F4 – very difficult (altitude difference more than 1300 metres, more than 9 hours of hiking);

Technical level

T1 – not demanding (no need to use your hands or any accessories), T2 – partially demanding (use of hands from time to time for easy climbing); T3 – demanding (occasional climbing using your hands and/or accessories – such as via ferrata set, in winter use of ice-pick and crampons); T4 – very demanding (longer and more demanding climbing routes secured with steel cables or similar, in winter constant use of ice-pick and crampons);

Levels in short

L1/2  - ultra light - special category – very easy hike or walk, adequate for persons who are not regular hikers however, would like to experience easy and not very long hikes, usually hikes without the need to change altitude (no uphill and downhill parts) or with very few uphill and downhill parts

L1 – easy – hikes during which altitude difference remains below 500 metres, expected duration is usually below five hours, no technical difficulties expected (no use of hands expected)

L2 – moderate- hikes during which altitude difference varies between 500 and 800 metres or hikes are longer than 20 kilometres and take more than five hours, occasional use of hands may be required, there might be some steep sections

L3 – difficult – hikes during which altitude difference is more than 800 metres, the use of hands is either required quite often due to rocky or steep terrain or hikes take up to seven hours due to long distance or unfavourable weather conditions (e.g. very hot weather)

Please note that difficulty levels are approximate and that description of particular hike will include additional pointers (e.g. hike categorised as L1 but becomes at least L2 if one takes up during summer months in hot weather or eg. Hike categorised as L2 – be aware that that some short steep sections downhill are often muddy  and use of hiking poles is highly recommended)
